European Superleague’s impact on domestic leagues

Revenue reduction and value loss of LaLiga and it's clubs, transferable to the rest of European Leagues and clubs (Source: LaLiga)

For your information, on past Friday 2 December LaLiga presented at the CEOE (the Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations), the conclusions of the KPMG report 2022, which outlined the huge economic impact and the damage that the European Superleague would have on LaLiga and its clubs, both in terms of revenue reduction and value destruction.

In this regard, please find attached the following documents produced by LaLiga (all in English language):

01. Letter of the President of LaLiga, Javier Tebas, addressed to all European Leagues and their affiliated clubs;

02. Presentation of KPMG’s 2022 report on the impact of the Superleague on LaLiga and its clubs;

03. Video of the entire event and presentation of KPMG’s 2022 report: Link to video

04. Didactic/explanatory video about the impact of the Superleague on the domestic leagues: Link to video download

The KPMG report estimates a loss of revenue for LaLiga and its clubs of up to 55%, and a value drop for the Non-Superleague clubs of up to 64%. The concepts of the Superleague and the damage are absolutely transferable to the rest of the European leagues and clubs, whose income and value would be equally affected.

The Superleague is working on a promotion and relegation format between European competitions and, although they don’t officially recognize it, we perfectly know this is what they are working on. The Superleague is working on a model where the value and relevance of the domestic leagues would be completely destroyed, as domestic competitions would no longer give access to the top European competition.

In 2019, UEFA and ECA presented a very similar model, and all European Leagues, clubs and stakeholders already rejected it and stopped it.

Regardless of the Superleague format, it will anyways destroy the value and relevance of domestic competitions, and the economic damage will be very similar. And, beyond any format, the concept of the Superleague does not change in any case: an elitist model where the big clubs decide on everything, and which is absolutely contrary to today's football based on democracy and where decisions are based on majorities.

We must all protect the successful European model we have built over the last 20 years, with a balanced ecosystem and a great industry.
